Biographical / Historical
Adapted in part from the Beloit College catalogue 1964-1965:
Completely renovating the former Carnegie library in the summer of 1963, the building became the Holman D. Pettibone Center for the Study of World Affairs, or World Affairs Center (WAC) for short, named in memory of the former Chairman of Beloit's Board of Trustees.
Holman D. Pettibone Center for the Study of World Affairs was dedicated in 1964. This three-story building serves as headquarters for all of Beloit's programs related to international study—the overseas study program, foreign language teaching, geography, interdisciplinary concentrations such as International Relations and Russian Studies, and other appropriate curricular offerings. The Center includes office-seminars for visiting scholars from abroad, a resources center, lounge areas, and classrooms.
By co-sponsoring guest speakers with international experiences, establishing the Cullister Center on peace and international issues, and providing the International Studies Resources Center with a collection of resource materials and publications on study, travel, and work abroad, WAC was a center for Beloit College students to gain a greater understanding of international affairs though various opportunities and experiences.
Today, the Office of International Education (OIE) has replaced WAC as a center for international education.
